A couple months back, I started the migration of hosted sites away from my dedicated box at ThePlanet. It wasn’t an issue of service or support from those guys, they have always been AWESOME to me. No, it was a simple question of expense vs. income. I’m simply not doing anywhere near the level of hosting I used to, so that server cost was higher than the money coming in from people hosting their sites on it.

So, I moved the high bandwidth stuff to various places appropriate for their needs, but I was left with the question of what to do with the smaller fish. I figured, what the heck, GoDaddy has been fine for my domain registrations, and they have some hosting plans, lets give it a rip. A call from not one but two of their customer service reps had a bit to do with it as well – they were both interested in helping me save some coin and what not. They seemed very helpful, so I decided to try it out. Since the sites were so small, I figured one of their shared hosting plans would be fine. Indeed, things were ok for a while, but then reports of site lag and database connection errors started cropping up on the vBulletin sites. Fast forward to today, and I get a call that one site is down. So I investigate, and find a handful of database tables are reporting “invalid information in .frm” … Ohh boy, not good, and I have no tools available to fix it. You don’t get much beyond a web interface to common stuff with shared hosting.

Fast forward a bit more, and I’m still on hold after talking to two people so far, both very polite and trying to be helpful, but I’ve been holding for the better part of the hour and twenty minutes. Good thing long distance is cheap with VoIP, or this would be one expensive call. Lets hope they can actually fix the problem now, or I might be updating this post with a horror story.
